Hands-On: Super Soaker Racer

Post by isoaker » Tue Aug 28, 2012 9:05 am

Recently got my hands on one of these old Super Soaker novelty items, the Super Soaker Racer.

More pics to come soon, but in the meantime, there are some things I hadn't expected from this item. It comes with a cup with a fill line so that you won't overfill the car part. The car's tires are neither rubber nor plastic; they are actually foam. Not so sure how durable foam-based tires would prove to be, but they are light. Lastly, the air pump attaches to the car via a clip. This clip also serves as the launching mechanisms. The car basically behaves like a semi-controlled FTS device. :goofy: (flying tank syndrome for those less familiar with that abbreviation).

All-in-all, a neat glimpse back at the heydays of the Super Soaker brand. I don't think I'll actually pressurize this item, but I do plan to at least measure its full PC/reservoir capacity.

So it's powered by pressurized water? I wonder if you could modify it to spray some water forward, that way you could send it into an enemy squad and rack up some kills without putting yourself in danger. :goofy: I've had ideas involving RC vehicles modified for use in water warfare, but I would think that it'd be too much trouble to do, without offering much in return.

We probably won't be back, but the legacy lives on.

Review and pictures of the Super Soaker Turbo Racer now posted.

Enjoy!

As for making it fire both forward while propelling itself, do-able, but the forward-firing stream needs to be smaller than the propulsion stream (or you're be firing backwards :goofy:) and it'll be using up its payload that much faster, reducing range. For a true attack vehicle, probably better off fitting a motorized water blaster onto a water-proof RC car for more functionality and control.
