Okay, looks like my water war game project will be a decent hit, so I guess now I'll make a separate topic to get tips or suggestions for all the generic stuff, like what kind of characters and weapons will be in the game. I'm really looking forward to these new 2007 guns, which are all essentially upgraded Max Infusion guns, so I may decide to put those in, which means the project may be delayed until actual statistics on them are available.
Anyway, this is what I got planned so far...
For the most part, I plan on an abundance of original characters, but I thought it'd make the game more interesting to include guests from various games and anime, as I've mentioned. (As long as it's freeware, I don't think there'll be any kind of legal problems.) These are just the characters that I've absolutely set my mind on including (unless someone suggests otherwise), along with background info if necessary (first three are the ones available from the start, the rest must be purchased/unlocked):
Also note that attempted crossovers are pretty much the source of almost every failed project I've done, due to negative criticism. I'm kinda hoping this'll be a different case.

Explanations:
On the subject of Hotaru, by now you can probably guess that Karasu isn't my real name, lol, but I've found that we have so much in common (and I mean a LOT in common, both inside and outside), that I've come to think of her as sort of a sister figure (hence why I made myself related, lol), so I thought it'd be nice to have her in. Also I thought of a neat plot involving the "Tomoe trio". And as for Sarah and Kaolla, I think their young ages and tendency for wreaking havoc makes them fit perfectly with the genre, and well... I just think it'd be totally hilarious! Also got a small side-plot idea for them too. As for Satoko, I'm not a Higurashi fan but I do know they DID have an actual water war once, I've seen it on YouTube.
On to weapons, here's the list, and note I've only used/owned a select few of these guns (marked by an *), so I'm pretty much relying on the statistic provided at iSoaker.com.

Water war project suggestions wanted - Characters/Weapons/Levels
Sounds good. I'm not much into those shows or anything, so I'll take your word for it regarding the characters.
The "rifles" category could be renamed to "pump cannons," as that's really what they are. You shoot water each time you pump. I'll add some other comments when I think of them.
EDIT: One quick question: Is there going to be a plot to the story? If you could integrate a decent storyline, that would be neat.\
You could also do something with the different brands. Like, maybe you fight one clan that uses only Super Soakers (made by Hasbro) and another that only uses Water Warriors gun (made by Buzz Bee Toys).

For the most part it's just a bunch of kids trying to have a good time, but as I said I do have plans for a plot involving the Tomoe family and the emergence mysterious mechanical weapon.
EDIT: Other characters I might add:
Rini (Sailor Moon) - Makes a good companion for Hotaru
Keitaro Urashima (Love Hina) - He'll give Sarah and Kaolla some good target practice.
Also thought of some more neat ideas. Another issue I may face eventually is having to update or add weapons midway through development, cuz this means I gotta make changes in every single level that's been already made, one level at a time, which can be very inefficient not to mention EXTREMELY time consuming. Therefore, I think it'd be best to store weapon statistics and data externally, meaning I'll use an external configuration file to hold all weapon statistics and load them at the start of each level, along with each characters own statistics. By doing this, when a player equips a weapon for their character, all stats (fixed or variable) are stored with that character's personal configuration data. This also sparked another fun idea I have...
Weapon tuning system. I personally prefer stock water guns, but I know many of you like to mod their guns to improve certain parameters. So I thought the ability to modify your weapons would be widely accepted. Here's how it'll work: each character has 2-3 slots for weapons (you pick 1 to take to each level), which are filled by purchasing guns and putting them in whatever slot. From there, you could select a slot and Tune it. My idea for this is sliding bars relating to the current state of specific parts of your water gun. For example, when working on a CPS firing chamber, you could adjust its thickness by sliding the bar one way to make it thinner (allowing increased water capacity) or the other way to make it thicker (exerting more force and thus improving range). I dunno how the interface will work with nozzles, since the sheer number of nozzle settings varies greatly from weapon to weapon, but you could adjust the output or water consumption by making the nozzles larger or smaller. Of course these are always directly balanced against each other, meaning for example, sliding the bar to make the chamber 10-15% thicker will also boost range by 10-15%, but also diminish capacity by 10-15%, and vice versa.
By doing this, it's possible to have multiples of the same weapon model (i.e. 2 Flash Floods, etc.) in your collection that perform completely differently from each other. It'd be interesting, however my main priority is to try and keep the game as simple as possible. Those are just my ideas. Still waiting on other suggestions, so if anyone's got any, I'd like to hear them...
